Percival leaves game with injury

Sports Network | August 14, 2008

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Rays closer Troy Percival left Thursday's game with the Oakland Athletics in the ninth inning with an undisclosed injury.

Percival was injured after fielding a sacrifice bunt from Mark Ellis. The 39- year-old scooped the ball from the grass and gave chase to Ellis up the first base line. Ellis was called out after straying from the basepath and Percival gingerly walked back to the mound before being removed.

Grant Balfour came on to allow the tying run later in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings with the run charged to Percival.

The right-hander is 2-0 with 3.69 earned run average and 27 saves this season for the AL-East leading Rays but has been plagued by a myriad of injuries, most recently hitting the disabled list in July due to a hamstring strain.
